Ngā Miro o Reo me Manawaroa
He mea tuku tēnei kauhau e Tawhirimakea Karaitiana rāua ko Helen Barlow. Ko Te Rauhina – Waimārama Knitting Club te tauira tipukāinga o ngā mahi a ngā kaumātua hei tautoko i te whakarauoratanga. Tokomaha ō rātou mema nō te reanga kāore i whakapakeketia i te reo Māori, kāore hoki i whai ara ki te ako pēnei i ō ēnei rā nei. Ahakoa kāore pea tō rātou ara ako e whai i te ara akomanga, mā roto mai i te whatuwhatu, te waiata, ngā kupu, me ngā kōrero, ka whakauru, ka tuku anō hoki rātou i tā rātou i taea ai.
Threads of Reo and Resilience
Presented by Tawhirimakea Karaitiana and Helen Barlow, Te Rauhina – Waimārama Knitting Club is a grassroots example of kaumātua doing what they can to contribute to revitalisation. Many of their members were part of the generation that were not raised with te reo Māori, nor accorded the opportunities to learn it as people are today. While their journey may not follow classroom pathways, through knitting, waiata, kupu, and kōrero they incorporate what they can and give what they have.
